im a windows user myself,i dont like linux nor use it. but i did use it before (pop os).
so im intersed in knowing why some people like it.
It works.
Which is a quality of standard that Windows does not maintain. I wouldn’t wish that garbage on my worst enemy.
Linux is Communism. Need I say more?
i dont like linux nor use it
What is this? Arguing with a 5yo? No offense but do you genuinely believe “I don’t like X” without even explaining why could lead to interesting conversations? Do better. At least provider argument on why you like Windows (there are actually some good reasons, even for people who don’t like Microsoft) and why you don’t like Linux (there also are good reason).
You’re not actually “intersed” otherwise you’d have at least bothered to link to couple articles, videos, etc arguing either way and would have at least taken the time to write 2 sentences properly.
Blocked as I have to assume it’s either engagement bait or just the laziest person on Earth.
Preach!
I get pissed off by typos in general, but when it’s just a quick chat and they missed the correct letter by one or just bad autocorrect, I can deal. (at least until they “accidentally a word” too many times to be readable)
But going to a group you disagree with to ask questions and get answers while, speaking like a kid in elementary school is actually bewildering.
Unless they actually are a kid in elementary school.
Linux does what I tell it to.
Windows does what it wants. Either what it thinks I want it to do, or what Microsoft wants me to do.
Considering I paid for my computer, I like having control over it. It’s that simple.
Yup!
My ComputerThis Computer
This says it all
I use Windows at work. It’s not a personal computer. It’s a computer controlled by microsoft, capital, etc.
In my personal life I prefer freedom and control.
Linux is an operating system. It handles your system resources and makes them available to your applications. It was built by devs who tried to make the system good.
Windows is a marketing tool. It is designed to get the user to subscribe to the cloud services that make Microsoft money.
It was built by devs who tried to make the system profitable.I only have to reboot when I want to, not when a corporation wants me to.
windows never forces me to reboot even if i have to update.
Win 10 pro never forced me but i did power cycle pretty often anyways. It did still give me bs full screen ads for win 11 though sometimes. Now im on Bazzite with minimal disruption and even some improvements to my workflow :)
Neat. Maybe they’ve changed it since I last used it. Still not going back though.
They have not changed it. You still just can configure a range of time where its not allowed to reboot. So OP is simply no power user, or is just lying. I sadly still need to use Windows on my working machine, and the forced update+reboot happens minimum once a month.
i do see the update icon but it doesnt just restart the pc by itself.
but it still restarts at all.
Funny, under win 10 I would wait weeks to do the updates, until I had no choice of reboot except update and reboot. At some point the machine would grind nearly to a halt with an update queued and soon as I did that update the machine would return to its regular speed.
I like the way Linux handles updates. I like the way it handles privacy (opt-in instead of opt-out) I like the fact that I’m never forced to do anything (going to windows 11, keeping bloat software, updates) I like that it is light and quick. I like to be able to choose a desktop environment and distro. I like that it is open-source and I don’t want to use US big tech corpo. I like that it does not try to sell me anything.
I don’t like not being able to play some games and printer setup.
It doesn’t hide what’s under the hood and permits to fix/modify it. Yes, I’m a nerd.
I’m a tinkerer. It’s made for people like me that like to take stuff apart and put it back together to see how it works. It also, quite literally, does EXACTLY as I tell it and set it up to operate. It doesn’t do disrespectful shit like revert my default browser settings to Edge. It is MY operating system and MY computer to 100% control however I wish, not some stale-ass predatory slop-driven corporation’s.
And one major thing that Linux also does that Windows does not is Linux will never install an application on your computer that you didn’t explicitly tell it to install.
I have uninstalled nopilot on work computers so many times. I run scripts to manually disable and remove it and prevent Windows from installing nopilot, and Windows updates, reverts what I did, and then reinstalls fucking nopilot, and then sneakily launches it in the taskbar where I can’t easily see that it’s running to begin with.
Voluntarily running windows at this point is kind of like voluntarily allowing yourself to be sexually assaulted.
Only weirdos and sad people who don’t know that it could easily not be like that continue to put up with it.
It’s free and using it means I don’t have to support American tech companies.
Everything everyone else said, but also it literally has more features. KDE Plasma and apps like Dolphin make Windows look like a toy.
I don’t like being used or taken advantage of. Simple as. When you have a Microsoft product, you are used by Microsoft. You PAY them for their operating system and then they SPY on your computer interactions. You buy their product and then you become their product as they make money off of tailoring ads to you based on where your mouse moves, what you click on, the contents of the files that you upload to OneDrive (that they then use to train Copilot with).
Linux is a tool. It helps me interface with the computer. It doesn’t have an agenda behind it that involves exploiting me for money. Linux is built on the assumption that humans are humans and not wealth extraction batteries.
Faster, lighter, stronger.
I still can use a 15yo laptop for daily tasks, still boot in less than 20s (with ssd).
No surprises, I remember having stuff unremovable, like google toolbar, and no forced reboot when you are still working (they fixed this issue).
Software management is way faster : you don’t have to download a zip, unzip, hit the .exe, then accept a fuckload of agreements.
Yeah. I bought my kaptop second hand. When it still had windows on it, it was basically usuable because jt was so laggy. I installed linux and, badda bing badda boom, works like a charm. Its been my main computer for a fee years now
i like not having to have a microsoft account to utilize it.
you know whats really awesome? being able to decide if i want updates. or a tightly-integrated piece of shit llm.
being able to modify literally every aspect of the shell.
windows 3.1 was more theme-able than win11.
linux works out of the box for all the old people i repurpose machines for and i dont have to think about cloud-connect bullshit. fuck, half of them dont notice its not windows until i mention it.
better question is why the fuck would you use windows without being paid to?
i use it bec i like it,i like that my cracks work there without effort. that i dont need to update my system to download an app. i like the ui,that any app will work. i never have to use the terminal. a lot of stuff. and about being paid,i didnt even pay for it i used massgravel (or whatever its named) to active it
Linux distros nowadays are fully working and usable without the need of the terminal. Terminal is mostly used in online guides. Because it is easier to write a commandline than making 5 screenshots about where you have to point in a GUI.
Haha. I don’t believe in destiny, but the things you like about Windows are the things I liked about Windows before I switched to Linux.
You’ll find many other fans of cracking / Liberating software, here. It’s where the “Libre” we talk about comes from.
Anyway, keep asking questions of you’re curious.
I’ll just add that I haven’t used the command line for anything basic on Linux in several years. Command line is really not necessary anymore, unless I’m doing something advanced like modding my games. Actually, I guess I haven’t modded anything in awhile that didn’t come with a graphical kit. But I’m sure I still might, for the right mod.
since you switched to linux. how do you use cracks? or did you stop using them?
how do you use cracks? or did you stop using them?
I make good money now and buy all my games, but I still apply mods.
Mod manager tools tend to just work on Linux now, thanks to the SteamDeck.
use cracks
Did I accidentally time travel to 1999?
why?
I dunno, I thought most gaming pirates these days just use re-packs.
i do use repacks. but cracks arent only for games,i have cracked software.
Depends on what you’re cracking, but for games there’s tons of cracked games that work great on Linux.
haha wow its been awhile for you hasnt it?
explain what changed if its that radical.
im not going to bother you seem trollish… your rep precedes you
g’day!

So wildly off topic question.
How are you seeing a reputation score?
host instance is using mbin, not lemmy. its more reddit-like than lemmy but has access to all the same content…also natively connects to the the twitterverse (mastodon).
their instance is using mbin, not lemmy
say what you want i just have unpopular opinions and dont care about karma like reddit since it doesnt affect anything here.
i just have unpopular opinions
Sure, but you chose a weird place to strut around yelling them loudly.
There is a difference between being a contrarian troll and having unpopular opinions.
