  • And this is just going to fuel on the fire that is DHH’s crusade. He’s already called the linux community “a bunch of clowns” so this is just going to generate more money for his dotfiles and more than likely grow the userbase.

Granted the Omarchy userbase are a bunch of morons. Also doesn’t help that youtube linux content creators are all pretty much praising the damn thing and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know why. Makes it easy to know which creators to unsub from but it literally leaves it with 4 left one of which doesn’t post anymore.

  • this is by design. NO COMPANY in the entire world is going to provide a product in hopes that one day you won’t need to use it anymore. So dating apps, by design, provide you with horrible matches so that you keep using said app. They don’t want you finding the “love of your life”, it’s bad business if they did.

  • could it look close? eh maybe. the visual customization of it is still kinda limited. like if you’re looking to have the same customization levels of say Plasmashell you’re out of luck. If you’re ok with the “pill” look then it’s fine but beyond that you couldn’t make it look like say DWM’s bar or what have you. But I suppose if you wanted it to look like cosmic or maybe gnome it’d be more doable since they all kinda share the same principal of “pills are a great look”

As far as if it’ll play nice with GNOME? no clue. I’ve used it with Kwin in the past as a replacement for Plasmashell and it worked fairly well.

  • yeah I’m honestly leaning towards it simply being a bad shutdown.

For backups I would highly suggest you look into Borg backups. There are free services that work with Borg as long as your backups are under 10GB. I’ve used borgbase.com in the past and that always worked well. With Borg you can automatically schedule your backups to not only upload them online but also to remind you to plug in like an external usb drive and backup. all backups are encrypted so really secure, fantastic tool I highly recommend.

  • you sure Fedora didn’t get corrupt? I’ve had that happen with Fedora on a bad shutdown and was no longer able to boot from the SSD boot partition.

When you run the SSD from a liveUSB can you write to it just fine? assuming you’ve backed up your data why not just try either installing another distro like Debian to test it or reinstall Fedora.

  • I move between NixOS and OpenBSD but try to keep things consistent for both.

Window Manager: I use a patched DWM. I have a suckless repo which makes adding my WM/Terminal/launcher/whatever to various distros/operating systems a breeze.

Terminal: patched ST which I will sometimes multiplex with tmux

file manager: if I need it, then it’s Yazi. but generally i just stick to the command line for file management.

Browser: for a long time I was using Qutebrowser but it feels like development has slowed down on it and the bugs have mounted. just doesn’t work as well as it once did and on OpenBSD it’s completely broken. so now I’m just boring and using a barebones version of Firefox on both systems. I was using Floorp on NixOS with Firefox I can keep it consistent across both Operating Systems.

IDE: honestly depends on what day it is. I’ll switch from Neo/Nixvim to DOOM Emacs to Helix. currently i’m using Helix on both systems as it’s snappy and it’s working well for me right now. config is easy. I might stick with it for awhile. I’m still getting used to some keybinds. biggest gripe is hitting ‘a’ drops you down a line so I have to keep remember to use shift+a instead. minor stuff like that.

that’s about it really. I try to keep my systems as minimal as possible.

NixOS. you get out of it what you put into. the initial setup might take a bit but once you have it set up to your liking then that’s it, you can just leave it alone until you want to update it whenever that may be. it’s extremely re-producible, you can git repo your config, install it where ever or on whatever machine so if you ever do upgarde then you can take your system with you. with the generations if you happen to break something or mess up a config it’s just a matter of going back to the previous generation and undoing whatever you did.

you can configure it in a way that it will work well on your machine. easy to change kernel params via the nix config, ssd/hdd settings, cpu settings, etc. the only time it gets heavy is when you update it but like I said you update it whenever you feel like updating it. you could leave it alone for a year if you really wanted to. it’s still going to work.

  • immediately with the AI built site. I’m sorry but if you’re creating a new distro first impressions are important and build trust. Seeing a website for your distro that is built entirely with an agent does not instill much confidence in the project because NOW i’m wondering “what other AI slop is in this distro?”

annnnnnd reading the site the guy who made this is clearly mentally unwell. folks DO NOT use this thing, I wouldn’t trust it on my system. if you do, keep it as a VM. this is like TempleOS levels of crazy but without a single ounce of talent.

  • As someone who has contracted for a few Canadian government agencies…oof good luck. I know Europe is making the switch, slowly, but in Canada it would take A LOT longer. Many systems are still on Windows 7. Many have ONLY just transitioned to 10 and even fewer to 11. Probably the most up to date one would be Ontario’s Employment Services. Only just got them on laptops so they could be mobile as opposed to using ancient dells. Add to the fact the vast majority of software they use is custom and build specifically for older Window installations. I shudder to think how long and how much it would cost to get that stuff working on Linux but man kudos to whomever takes that contract, they’ll make bank.

But yeah. Don’t get me wrong I’d love to see it but I don’t see it happening in my life time and i’m in my mid 40s.

I use KDE. I found GNOME annoying and extemely opinionated. I also got turned off by it when I asked a question on mastodon like a year ago about an issue I was having with GNOME and an actual GNOME dev replied to me and essentially said I was using the DE wrong. basically I wasn’t using it the way the GNOME devs use it.
