  • It is, usb4 and thunderbolt are (as I understand) extensions of the pcie bus or something, so they do require escalated security permissions in all operating systems.

macOS desktops auto approve, laptops request permission, and windows does its own approval.

Linux requires approval until you set your computer’s security settings, but I think it only approves on user level security by default (hence the gnome issue).

I’m also not an expert, so if your device shows up in boltctl as approved it could very well be a different issue. I’ve only done this on amd.

  • Might be worth checking artists on mastodon/blue sky under generative art tags.

There are a number, but it’s impossible to find their work because “generative art” has been saturated with stable diffusion slop. Tag search on those sites help

Many share source so you could contact them or run their projects to make your own wallpapers. Ideally, get permission though.

  • Yes! Passkeys don’t solve anything.

I just don’t see how you can do passkeys without still having passwords, so it’s nice that it can’t be phished, but your password still can! (I mean, you can go magic/email link only, but that’s annoying AF)

If you did go pure passkeys, the second someone gets a new computer or phone, or switches phone type, or they have a house fire and their devices get destroyed, they’re kinda fucked.

Unless they have a password manager, which is a single point of failure that a lot of people don’t trust. But that doesn’t fix the above issues.

So where I’m at is keep your main passwords or password manager backup auth codes in a safe deposit box and just do whatever the fuck you find easier, and hope your house doesn’t burn down.
