Linux@programming.dev•Steam Survey For May 2026 After Delay: Linux Just Under 4%
5·13 days agoWhen you are selected for the survey, you get a pop-up dialog when you open Steam that asks you if you want to participate. You can either accept or decline. You WILL notice it, when it happens.

Linux@programming.dev•Steam Survey For May 2026 After Delay: Linux Just Under 4%
29·13 days agoBack when I was on Windows, I constantly got these hardware surveys. Now, running Linux, I haven’t seen one in months…

Linux@programming.dev•Swap space on Nvidia VRAM, in case you bought a 5090 and now can't afford RAM
9·17 days agoHere’s someone testing it to try make a computer without (or with as little as possible) RAM:
I mean, I fully expected them to use Denuvo or another aggressive DRM - considering the hype around the game. I initially expected something worse after I read that comment. Since DRM was broken by abusing the hypervisor, I wonder if a new generation of DRM might block running in a VM or on Linux/Proton completely. Like Kernel level DRM module or such.
If it’s “just” Denuvo, I personally don’t care that much as it usually gets removed after a while and I usually wait for a sale anyways. My backlog is big enough to keep me entertained.
As for the betrayed: Why the fuck do people preorder games? I get it, if you want a physical edition of a console game and want to be able to play day one (or want to have it delivered day one). I also get it somewhat with physical goodies of a limited edition (as the digital goodies are usually just a simple skin or such and not worth it). And I get it, if you consider backing a crowd funding campaign of an indie game as preorder. But besides that? It can and will only be a let down usually.
Huh? What do you mean? I guess they announced Denuvo or some other DRM?
They even got ads for horse piss now?!

I mean I get the idea of the forced restart and the general waiting time - assuming a scammer wants you to install a “side loaded” app, it will disconnect their call with you, of they’re calling you on that phone. Same for a waiting period that forces the scammer to either hang around on the phone with you for a long time or to call again some time in the future.
But 24h?

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Please let me squash a merge commit
15·2 months agoThat’s basically my commit history for every repo where I need the pipeline to run to see if everything works.
…and because it slows down the execution a bit and this avoids the race condition that triggers the bug, it now runs flawlessly.

Technology@beehaw.org•Amazon upsets ebook lovers by ending support for old Kindle devices
7·2 months agoWith an old Kindle, it was trivially easy to rip Kindle books to retail-quality epubs.
Heh, yes. The encryption key for their old DRM was derivated from the Kindle’s serial number. Wanted to crack your library? Go to the webpage, download them all there (yes, that’s now blocked, too) open them all in calibre and use a plugin to deactivate the DRM (trivially to find back then). Enter your serial number and you’ve freed your whole library.
There’s also a relevant xkcd for that.
Don’t you think, that’s enough already?
bool isChild() { pid_t result= fork() return (result == 0) }
Also they constantly tested various variants to get around the block list (Micr0slop, M!croslop,…) just because.
Can we also mix it with some old names? Micro$lop for example?
