If Wikipedia is to be believed English (at least British English) does in fact the same thing. Although it’s “curly” instead of “curved” brackets.

I think you’re confusing two things. In the meme at the top, “curved” brackets means parentheses, not curly brackets.

      In American English:

      ( ) parentheses
{ } braces, curly braces or curly brackets
      [ ] square brackets
      < > angle brackets

No, I’m not confusing things but directly referencing Wikipedia (and as explicitly mentioned British English):

        ( ) (round) brackets
        [ ] square brackets
        { } curly brackets
        <> angle brackets

American English however calls the same:

        ( ) parentheses
        [ ] (square) brackets
        { } (curly) braces
        <> angle brackets or chevrons

Yes, that means British an American people are meaning different things when talking about brackets (round vs. square as the default).

        So I will repeat myself:

English (at least British English) does in fact the same thing.

round, square, curly and angle brackets…

So given that big chunks of the world learn British English it is probably not just a “German thing” as OP suggested.

I guess I wasn’t clear, because your reply doesn’t address what I was talking about, but it turns out I was simply confused.

          You said:

          “curly” instead of “curved” brackets

But I didn’t think anyone was calling curly brackets curved brackets, so what you said seemed odd. It turns out I didn’t read who you replied to closely enough, and the German commenter was indeed saying they’re called “curved” brackets (in German).

Then again, perhaps the German person was wrong because DuckDuckGo translate says that word actually does mean “curly” and not “curved”.
