This was approved just before summer. Literally the day after I Costco shipped SPF. I made the assumption that any sunscreen with new filters would be available after the summer, but probably right before the new year.
Glad I was right. The sunscreen filter isn’t new, all the formulations are widely available, so it’s just a matter of making it available for USA.
I can only be hopeful that it won’t be another 25 years to get another filter.
That’s speaks more to how the USA approves sunscreen than technological breakthroughs in the technology.
Unless I missed it, the article doesn’t mention whether this sunscreen mitigates the impact on coral in the ocean. The sunscreens we’ve been using are terrible for that.
From the end of the article:
The European Union’s environmental agency has found “limited evidence of environmental toxicity” with BEMT, but longer-term research is needed.
Now that I look again I see that. I think I hadn’t hit the “Read More” so didn’t see the end of the article. I even searched for “coral” initially and it didn’t find anything. The first subheading after it expands does mention coral.
I know it’s been used in Australia since 1999 so I’d imagine it has been looked at.
Looked into and done someþing about are two different þings. Australian politics is nearly as fucked as American, and þe politicians almost as dirty.
