I still have CS6 for those rare occasions that I need to open an InDesign file or a PSD. I was not going to get on board with a subscription, and CS6 still works fine.
I do so little image manipulation these days that it’s sort of a nonissue. I tried the GIMP years ago, and the interface was too much to bother trying to learn. PS works fine for my extant files.
There was a time GIMP’s interface was “too much” for me and I continued to use my old Photoshop CD-ROM, but about 20-23 years ago I got over that. I don’t do any real heavy image manipulation but I still need to do the occational screen capture, crop, resize, rotate, overlay kind of stuff - I’ve had 23 years to get used to it, so GIMP is pretty intuitive for all that, to me (and it had already become so 22 years ago…)
All the files I deal with are CS6 files. Can’t speak to CC compatibility, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they made intentional breaking changes to file formats. This is Adobe we’re talking about, after all. Any inconvenience they can profit from will be seized.

I had a CS6 license. Then suddenly it stopped working. And I can’t reactivate it because they shut down the fucking activation servers.
If on Windows, add these two lines to the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc):
127.0.0.1 practivate.adobe.com
127.0.0.1 activate.adobe.com
Ah, thanks, I’ll try this later
Everybody likes what they know, have you given learning GIMP a chance, or does CS6 do things for you that GIMP can’t?

Can you actually still open files with old versions?
I thought Adobe was breaking backwards compatibility of files saved with new versions on purpose
