They competed for an award Google sponsored or held a competition for. Like an X Prize.
A board member was related to someone high up in Google (as in colleague, college room mate etc) or worked there previously.
Thank you for that! Turns out this organization received a $5 million+ grant from Google, after operating under $5000 for like 4ish year.
